"Christmas, or The Good Fairy" was first published December 26, 1850 on the front page of the The National Era newspaper published out of Washington, D.C. At the time of its writing, 39-year-old Harriet Beecher Stowe had recently moved to Brunswick, Maine after 18 years in Cincinnati, Ohio. She and her husband, professor Calvin Stowe, were the parents of 6 living children, ranging in age from 13 to 5 months. They had buried a toddler son in Cincinnati the year prior. Harriet was an established author and her published writing helped support their family. She knew Gamaliel Bailey, editor of The National Era, from Cincinnati, when Bailey worked with James Birney on the abolitionist newspaper The Philanthropist, which had been attacked by pro-slavery mobs.
