When will the project be done?
How can I help?
- Public: The Ohio History Connection receives funds from the Ohio Capital Appropriation every 2 years that are allotted to various projects within their site system network. The Ohio History Connection’s mission is to spark discovery of Ohio's stories by embracing the present, sharing the past and transforming the future. In recent capital cycles, the appropriation has included some funds specifically allocated for the Harriet Beecher Stowe House restoration project.
- Private Grants: Grants secured by the Ohio History Connection and the Friends of Harriet Beecher Stowe House for this project include funds awarded by the National Park Service, the Thomas J. Emery Memorial Foundation, the Ohio Valley Foundation, the Austin E. Knowlton Foundation, and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
- Individual Donors: Donations from individual donors and members of the Friends of Harriet Beecher Stowe House contribute to both the restoration project and to ongoing public programming and operations.
Who is doing the work?
- The project is being managed by architects, archaeologists, restoration specialists, and historic carpenters from the staff of the Ohio History Connection in collaboration with the Executive Director and Board of the Friends of the Harriet Beecher Stowe House. Additional skilled specialists are contracted for paint analysis, masonry, brickwork, carpentry, finishes, and landscaping.
When will the project be done?
- Initial planning for this project began nearly a decade ago and work is being phased as funding allows.
- This full historic restoration has included interior and exterior restoration of both the Beecher family home (1840) and Edgemont Inn (1940) wings of the house, as well as updates to visitor amenities and administrative space for staff and volunteers.
- As the restoration process unfolds, we are continually updating our interpretation through storytelling tours, exhibits, and outreach programs.
