FAQ's
How long is the visit?
- Sneak Peek Visits last approximately 60 minutes and are guided by an educator. Final tour of the day begins at 3pm and walk-in bookings are subject to availability.
- Sneak Peak Visits are a $5 flat rate for all visitors.
- Your educator will meet you, confirm or book your registration, and ask you to share about what interests brought you to the House today.
- You and your group will learn about the history this house witnessed in 1840 and 1940 through a combination of educator presentation, historic photographs and maps, hands-on activities, and conversation with the educator and each other.
- You will get to see for yourself the historic restoration process that has been unfolding at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House for several years. Each visit is a snapshot in time, and each weekend the work will be at a different stage.
- Plan to enjoy the outdoor exhibit on the historic site grounds and shop the bookstore before or after your house visit. Our outdoor classroom (scroll down for pictures) is perfect for a lunch picnic in warm weather.
- Yes! Walnut Hills is full of great restaurants and coffee shops.
- We LOVE welcoming kids to the museum--however, the things that make the Sneak Peek Visit experience special also mean it's not a great fit for visitors who need space to move and touch things. We recommend ages 12 and up, and trust each family/group to know which kids will succeed in this environment. Want something perfect for even the littlest historians? Save the date for Harriet's Birthday Party Sunday, June 9th from 1-4pm!
- Maybe! There is increased dust in the house which is being mitigated by commercial filtration systems. We have masks available if you find that helpful--just ask when you check in. Hard hats may be provided when entering areas of active restoration. If you have medical concerns related to your visit, please give us a call at 513-751-0651.
Parking
There is a small parking lot directly behind the building. Accessible ramp starts at the far end. Free street parking is also available.
Stowe Park: Outdoor Classroom & Picnic Area
The green space adjacent to the Harriet Beecher Stowe House is a City of Cincinnati park that is free and open to the public from dawn to dusk.
There are 5 picnic tables and 1 bench available to others whenever they are not being used by a Harriet Beecher Stowe House program. One of the tables is accessible for those using wheelchairs or motorized scooters via a crushed rock pathway. Feel free to pack your lunch and enjoy the grounds before or after your house tour, walking tour, program, or event. All City of Cincinnati Park Board rules apply. Click here for details. |
Accessibility
If you have any accessibility needs, please give us a call (513-751-0651) so we can ensure you have a great visit experience. The first floor of the house has limited accessibility by wheelchair and stroller. Standard size wheelchairs will fit through our entrance hall. Wider width wheelchairs may not. Please contact us for additional details. A concrete ramp begins on the far side (north side) of the parking lot and continues up the sidewalk and wooden ramp to the side door. Currently the second floor is only accessible by stairs.
